My dearest reader,
I’m writing to you on a beautiful March morning from my sun-soaked back porch as I slowly savor my morning beverage of choice: an iced latte made with Kion mycotoxin-free coffee, a touch of vanilla bean syrup, and local A2/A2 raw whole milk.
I started drinking raw milk consistently a couple of years ago when I was living in DC — I was desperate to heal my dairy intolerance after years of drinking oat milk (never again) and had heard that the enzymes in raw milk could do the trick. Not knowing how controversial this choice was, I shared my obsession with it on Instagram. Enter a flash flood of both curious and angry DMs: everything from “where did you get this?” to “this is where you lose me.”
The truth is that I’m not afraid of controversy — in fact, I like it. I believe that the difference between an interesting thinker and a dull one is the ability to lean into debate and risk potentially offending those who aren’t willing to think outside cultural norms. That said, I was shocked at how offensive my choice to drink raw milk seemed to be.
The cow in the room: is raw milk political virtue signaling?
